The College Of Mediators excellent article about the differences between men and women and how we communicate with each other in mediation is well worth a read.  

As well as offering fascinating research into the gender differences in communication generally, Tony Whatling talks about the impact on mediation, not just in dealing with couples, but in coping with a co-mediation and in promoting better understanding between all parties.
